The man accused of stealing Nick Kyrgios’ luxury green Tesla while holding the tennis star’s mother at gunpoint has appeared in court.
Police allege that the man, who remains anonymous for legal reasons, threatened Kyrgios’ mum Norlaila with a gun and demanded she hand over the keys to the vehicle and show him how to drive it.
They also allege that the tennis champ called police and used his phone to track the car for them. He used an app on his phone to do this as well as set a speed limit, reported news.com.au.
A “short pursuit” was carried out but later abandoned due to safety concerns for other road users. Eventually the man was caught after being cordoned off a street and was arrested.
Norlalia told police interviewers she was fearful that the man would return and “blow a hole in the door”.
A deadline has been given to police to finalise an evidence brief against the accused, with the matter yet to proceed.
The 32-year-old having now been in custody for 10 weeks, and the man’s defence barrister Jan De Bruin has appealed to the ACT Magistrates Court to expedite the process.
He said the delay had made it “impossible” for his client to have the matter finalised “in one or the other way”.
The man has pleaded not guilty to five charges: aggravated robbery, driving a vehicle without consent, failing to stop for police, resisting a public official and driving while suspended.
This is the second time the matter has been delayed due to police failing to provide an evidence brief.
A new deadline of September 12 has been given, with the magistrate warning the court “might need to take action” if the police can’t disclose the evidence.
