Greek shipping remains dominant in the global market accounting for a commanding presence in both tonnage and dominance in the EU.

According to the recently unveiled Union of Greek Shipowners’ Annual Report for 2022-2023, Greece continues to have supremacy as the world’s foremost shipping nation.

Greek shipowners preside over a 21 per cent of the total global tonnage, commanding a fleet comprising a remarkable 5,520 ships.

This maritime dominance carries important implications for the European Union, where Greek interests extend their influence over a staggering 70 per cent of the EU-controlled fleet in the realm of strategically vital vessel types.

“The Greek-owned fleet stands as a linchpin in fortifying the European Union’s food security and energy autonomy,” a fact affirmed by the UGS in this year’s report.

In the preface of the annual data, Melina Travlos President of the UGS, articulates the essential need for “unified action amid the current challenging global landscape”.

Travlos underscored the necessity for concerted, tangible initiatives aimed at preserving Greece’s rich maritime heritage while propelling the industry forward.

This imperative aligns with the overarching goal of preserving Greek shipping, “a formidable national asset that resonates on both regional and international scales”, Travlos stressed.
