Pharos, the alliance who’s mission is “to fortify the teaching, learning, and use of the Greek language across the country” has initiated a student survey aimed at gathering insights and feedback from Greek language learners.
Designed to focus on enhancing student numbers and promoting the value of learning Greek, the survey seeks to understand the experiences, views, and attitudes of young learners.
Professor Emeritus Joseph Lo Bianco AM expressed the purpose behind the survey, stating, “We must understand why [student] enrolments have been in decline for a long time. Understanding the views, experiences, and attitudes of young learners will guide our actions to prevent further decline.”
Collaborators within the Pharos alliance include institutions like La Trobe University Modern Greek Studies, Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, and Community Languages Victoria, among others, along with numerous volunteers who are committed to revitalising Greek language education.
The Pharos alliance hope the survey will serve as a signal to the Greek Australian community that there is a committed effort to ensure Greek language’s place in Australian schools and society remains strong, and is particularly interested in hearing from senior high school students in Years 10, 11, and 12, as these are often the years when Greek language learning tapers off.
Additionally, university students, regardless of their current studies, are encouraged to participate, providing valuable insights to help shape future planning.
Students and those invested in the future of Greek language education in Australia are encouraged to participate in the survey here.
