Women around the world, including Athens, Greece will be dressing fancy and riding their decorated bikes on September 17 as they demand car-free days and car-free zones in the cities.
The participants of the Fancy Women Bike Ride movement are looking to motivate more women to use bikes in the city, create an awareness among car drivers of the number of cyclists and to convince local authorities to invest in safe bicycle infrastructure and services.
It will also be held to raise awareness of World Car Free Day later this month.
World Car Free Day is an annual event that encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day.
The day has seen a number of benefits including reduced air pollution, getting in exercise and the promotion of walking and cycling in a much safer environment.
Volunteers of the Fancy Women Bike Ride movement are demanding more of these days through the year, as well as dedicated zones free of vehicles.
Also, this month in Europe is Mobility Week, which sees towns showcase their commitment to clean and sustainable urban transport from September 16 to 22.
The inaugural bike ride took place a decade ago and spread across worldwide media the next day.
300 women gathered for the event in Izmir, Turkey in 2013, and the next year saw it expand to three cities and then 10, and in 2019 there was 115 events across 15 countries.
This year will see women, and also men, who are encouraged to join but not take the spotlight, ride their bikes in unison across 200 cities in 25 countries.
