It is an historic moment for Brisbane Roar as they qualified for their first ever Australia Cup final, and they are set to face Sydney FC in what will no doubt be a major battle that both teams will hope to prevail in.
The Queenslanders are seeking their first taste of silverware in nearly ten years, their last trophy coming from their hugely successful 2013/14 campaign where they won the A-League double (Premiership and Championship).
The Roar booked their place in the Australia Cup final after downing NPL Victoria side Melbourne Knights 0-1 in their semi-final clash on Sunday evening.
The result ensured there would not be a repeat of last year’s Cup final, wherein an NPL team made it to the final stage.
Sydney FC, meanwhile, defeated reigning A-League premiers Melbourne City 1-2 at AAMI Park to make their first Cup final since 2018.
The Sky Blues pulled off a mighty upset in front of the City faithful, knocking out the tournament favourites in a result that would have delighted Brisbane as much as the Sydneysiders.
Despite this, Sydney FC will feel they are favourites over the Roar and, given that they lost their last Australia Cup final 2-1 to Adelaide United, they will likely be extra motivated to win the trophy, particularly players like Rhyan Grant and Andrew Redmayne who played in that final.
Football Australia will confirm the details for the Cup final tomorrow, including the host city and venue, with the game currently scheduled to take place the weekend of Saturday 7 or Sunday 8 October.
