Irene Pnevmatikos, who has served in the Legislative Council for five and a half years and has advocated fiercely for the interests of South Australians, is stepping away from politics.

In a statement from the SA government, Pnevmatikos said she is stepping down due to ongoing health issues.”It is with much regret that I intend to resign as a member of the Legislative Council due to ongoing health issues.”

She took the opportunity to thank everyone who had supported her over the years.

“I wish the incoming member all the best. I know they will serve the people of South Australia well,” the MLC said.

Pnevmatikos chaired the Legislative Review Committee and committees inquiring into wage theft and the gig economy.

The daughter of working-class migrants attained a PhD, then completed a law degree, and finally became an elected member of parliament in 2018.

The Premier of SA, Peter Malinauskas, said in her years in the Legislative Council, “Irene has been a passionate advocate for social justice and a fair go.”

“She has fought hard to represent those whose voices have not been heard.”Irene’s enthusiasm, conviction and advocacy will be missed. I thank her for her service to the State,” Malinauskas said.

Before her election, she served in various roles at the Workers Compensation Tribunal. She worked as a solicitor and equity partner in her law firm.
