The church of The Annunciation of Our Lady, commonly known as ‘Evangelismos’, Melbourne’s oldest Greek Orthodox church, will temporarily close its doors this spring for a significant restoration project, including installing a new marble floor and updated furnishings.
The initiative has been made possible through the support of the Andrianopoulos Family, marking a pivotal moment in the church’s history.
Founded on Sunday, June 23, 1901, The Annunciation of Our Lady church has been a spiritual cornerstone for Melbourne’s Greek community for over 120 years.
This historic place of worship, which endured a fire in 2016, has served as a vital hub for cultural and spiritual exchange among Greek Australians, with many attending weekly masses and participating in the annual Feast Day Celebration on March 25.
The restoration project, which will install a new marble floor and modernised furniture, is a testament to the ongoing commitment to preserving the church’s rich heritage.
While the church will temporarily close its doors during renovation, it is expected to reopen for Christmas celebrations.
As the restoration project progresses, the church anticipates a renewed sense of purpose and a more welcoming environment for community members.
