Greece, alongside 13 other member states of the European Union have all committed to the improvement of sexual and reproductive health rights.

The 14 nations gathered at the EU in Zaragoza, Spain to sign a joint Declaration for the Guarantee of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights on Thursday.

According to Athens – Macedonian News Agency (AMNA), Deputy Social Cohesion and Family Minister Maria-Alexandra Kefala signed the guarantee on behalf of Greece.

She said that Greece’s commitment to the declaration “relates in essence to safeguarding the irrevocable right to health of women and girls … so that they may be able to take themselves properly informed and responsible decisions for their life and their body.”

Kefala added that neglecting the right to reproductive and sexual health “comprises an undermining of equality and the opportunity of an equal access to health, which is a fundamental human right.”

The signing nations must now act on the declaration, which calls for them to provide universal access to scientifically sound facts and training on sexual education, access to comprehensive, quality and affordable services, especially to teenagers, and access for all people of reproductive age to fertility therapies, without discrimination.

This comes as the third European Political Community Summit is currently ongoing, hosted by Spain in Granada, Andalusia.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides are attending the event alongside 43 other states to primarily discuss the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, graduate mobility and artificial intelligence.
