Kayla McKeown polished off a stellar display at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Athens with a clean sweep in the Backstroke events, beating three World Cup swimming records in the process.
The Australian swimmer won each of the Backstroke events at the World Cup in Athens (which took place from October 13-15), taking out the gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m races.
She beat her own World Cup swimming records in each of the races, beating the record times she had set in Berlin earlier this month to continue her impressive form.
McKeown had earlier finished in first place in the 50m with a time of 27.02 seconds, 0.22 faster than the previous record, and then won the 100m race with a time of 57.63, 0.34 quicker than the prior record.
The 22-year-old swimmer made it a hat-trick of victories in the Backstroke with a first-place finish in the 200m race in 2:06.02, 0.45 seconds faster than the record she set in Berlin, thus completing the Backstroke clean sweep.
In addition to Backstroke, McKeown also competed in the 200m Individual Medley race (which combines four 50m races of Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle) where she finished third, losing out to American Torri Huske (2nd) and Canadian Sydney Pickrem (1st).
Other notable events at the World Cup in Athens included Greece’s Apostolos Christou finishing third in the Men’s 100m Backstroke in 53.61 seconds, much to the joy of the passionate home crowd.
