The Greek-Australian councillor of Brimbank City, Sam David, first elected in 1997, was honoured for his many years of valuable service to local government with the Councillor Service Award. All his fellow councillors congratulated David on his recent award and recognition at the last council meeting.
Notably, Cr David – who turns 84 this month – still serves as councillor, as his current term expires in one year; David has served three terms as mayor of Brimbank. Upon receiving the award, David told Neos Kosmos that he was “thrilled” to receive this recognition. Still, he admitted that “one must know when to give up one’s position to others.”
Cr David did not limit his services to local government alone; he was a board member of South Melbourne FC’ Hellas Melbourne’ for more than ten years, during an era in which the Greek immigrant soccer club was at its glory. Cr David even served as vice president of the team for a brief period.
Brimbank Mayor, Bruce Lancashire, described Cr David as an “institution” in the city and joked that “there is nothing worse than walking into the Sunshine Mall with councillor David” as “every other person recognises him.”
Cr Ranka Rasic said Cr David was committed to his community and the city council.
“Councillor David is a very community-oriented person who has devoted so much of his time and effort and attention to our area, and many members of the community are grateful for that.”
Cr David the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) director who presented the award said that serving the community through local government is a unique responsibility.
“Communities need dedicated individuals, like those who receive these awards, who are willing to give their time and energy to serve the interests of people and their local communities.”
Cr Clark said, “Being a councillor can sometimes be a thankless task”, and highlighted how MAV believes as an association that it is critical to “provide that recognition.”
Upon receiving the award, the visibly emotional octogenarian, Cr David, thanked the citizens for entrusting him and allowing him to work for them over the years. Reflecting on his long career, Cr David said, “I still think it felt like yesterday – 20 years ago.”
