The dominance of New Democracy and Kyriakos Mitsotakis was confirmed by ALCO poll, conducted by Alpha TV . However, the survey also highlighted pessimism among Greeks over cost or living and personal finances.

ND leads SYRIZA by 20.6 points, making the difference between the two parties increase by 1.8 points. SYRIZA’s popularity seems to be declining, while PASOK and KKE gained around a point each. Among the other – and smaller – parties only Niki and Hellenic Solution record some gains compared to the previous month.

The populist nationalist party Spartiates recorded a drop of almost two points and remain well below the 3 per cent threshold which is required to elect MPs in the Greek Parliament, while Plefsi Eleftherias has also dropped to 2.6 per cent.

As party leaders, Kyriakos Mitsotakis leads by 31 points in prefered prime minister, while SYRIZA’s newly elected leader, Stefanos Kasselakis, leads PASOK’s leader, Nikos Androulakis, by one point. Both score less than 10 per cent, which means Mitsotakis enjoys a major personal lead over his competitors.

Despite the popularity of both ND and its leader, 73 per cent of the respondents surveyed said they have cut back on even basic items, while 67 per cent plan to cut back on heating during winter. The majority of the respondents remain skeptical about the government’s estimates regarding price cuts, as almost 80 per cent do not expect that any intervention will live up to their expectations.
