In an era where global connections are fundamental, linguistic diversity stands as an asset, according to a media statement by Pharos, an alliance committed to the resurgence of Modern Greek teaching.

“Northcote High School, for the past 40 years, has prided itself on its Modern Greek language program, offering a unique gateway to the treasures of Greek culture,” the Pharos statement said.

Pharos warned, however, that the future of this esteemed program is currently at risk due to a decline in student enrolment.

“The significance of the Greek language transcends mere words; it is a conduit to a world steeped in literature, philosophy, and history.

“From the epic sagas penned by Homer to the philosophical musings of Plato and Aristotle, learning Greek opens direct portals to the bedrock of Western thought and culture. It grants access to a rich tapestry of Greek history, spanning from the classical era to more contemporary Greek diasporas, including the community in Australia,” Pharos’ media release said.

It went on to promote enrolment into Northcote High School’s Greek language, which it says offers “an immersive journey into the heart of Greek culture.”

According to the Pharos statement, the program has educators and resources that allow students to gain a “firsthand exploration” of this vibrant Hellenic culture.

Beyond cultural enrichment, proficiency in Greek offers advantages in familial connections, “comprehension of STEM terminology rooted in Greek etymology, professional advantages in serving Greek-speaking clients, and enhanced travel experiences in one of the world’s most sought-after tourist destinations.”

Pharos is keen to address the “concerning decline in student enrolment.”

Its representatives met with Chris Jones, the principal of Northcote High School, who expressed concern over the declining enrolment in Greek language subjects, highlighting that the Year 7 Greek language class 2024 is at risk unless more students enrol.

Pharos wants residents in Northcote High School to consider enrolling in the Year 7 Greek class for 2024 to bolster the program.
