Questions were asked about Kostas Tsimikas’ ability to fill the major gap left by Andrew Robertson in the defensive line, though they seem to have been answered as the Greek star has performed admirably in recent weeks.

The former Olympiacos left back has come to Liverpool’s aid at a crucial juncture, stepping up in the wake of Robertson’s injury to sufficiently up the Scotsman’s absence from the defence.

The timeliness of his return to form cannot be understated, with many people worried that his poor performances earlier in the season were a sign he would not be able to handle the responsibility of being the Reds’ main left back.

However, his recent performances against the likes of Manchester City and Brentford have alleviated any fears about him.

It was the game against Brentford just before the international break that particularly enthused the Merseyside club’s fans, managing to bag himself two assists as well as help protect the clean sheet in their 3-0 win.

Speaking via ECHO following that game, Tsimikas stated:

“I’m really happy I came back against Brentford. I have to keep going with the same passion. Okay, this can happen, we play football, it’s a very difficult sport. It’s up to me now to continue to play good and to make assists for the team.”

Tsimikas’ journey at Liverpool has been very stop-start, unable to get a consistent long run of games due to being Robertson’s deputy, but the last month has afforded him the chance to showcase his talents and build a rhythm.

Even with Robertson injured, Tsimikas still faces competition for his spot with the likes of Joe Gomez ready to step in, meaning the Greek “Scouser” (as Liverpool fans call him) cannot become complacent.

The left back demonstrated his commitment to the club when he pulled out early from Greece’s camp this past international break, a decision which would have particularly pleased manager Jurgen Klopp.

Football is by nature unpredictable, and this is no different for teams and players who regularly go through various ups and downs.

Tsimikas is on the right track and the questions now remains on if he can maintain this form and continue to prove he belongs on the world’s biggest footballing stage.
