Greek race walker Antigoni Drisbioti will be spending a large part of her preparation for the Paris Olympic Games in Australia.
Widely considered as the best Greek walker of all time, Drisbioti spent time in Melbourne and Canberra last year and is expected to return here on December 1.
She now knows the training centres quite well and the camps she will be competing in.
Earlier this year Drisbioti took second place in the Australian 20km Race Walk Championship in Melbourne, with a performance of 1:28.12′.
She is the Greek record holder for the 3000m, 20km and 35 km walks and has won eight national titles.
During her stay last time, she also visited the offices of Neos Kosmos. Our newspaper gave her a boomerang gift, which in hindsight was perhaps a metaphor, given she left and came back, just like the Indigenous weapon would.
“My first time in Australia but not my last” she told us.
At the European Championships in Munich in 2022, Drisbioti made history, as the first Greek track and field athlete to win two gold medals in the same event.
As aforementioned the 20km walk bronze medal winner of the Budapest World Championships is expected in Melbourne on December 1, and will stay until March 30.
During this time, she will train in the group of coach Brent Valance, together with the Budapest World Championships silver medal winner Jemina Montag.
At the same time, she will have the opportunity to participate in competitions, so that she is initially ready for the European Championships in Rome, which is also her first goal for distinction in 2024. After Melbourne, she is expected to return to Europe.
