Greek Australians enrolled in Greece’s electoral rolls are poised to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming European elections starting June 9, 2024.

This new development, introduced by Minister for the Interior Niki Kerameus and Deputy Minister Theodoris Livanios in a press conference on Thursday, introduces postal voting for EU elections for the Greek Diaspora registered to vote.

Kerameus said the new measure applies to European elections and referenda, distinct from general elections. Detailing the postal voting bill will entail consultations among the government and political entities and engagement with the public before the anticipated voting phase in early 2024.

Calling this move historically crucial for democracy, Kerameus underscored that implementing such measures is pivotal in curbing abstention rates.

She is scheduled to delve deeper into the specifics of this initiative during a live webinar hosted by The Hellenic Initiative (THI) Australia on Monday, December 4.

The minister will discuss her policy priorities and provide insights on Greece’s non-profit sector and how the Greek diaspora can support Greece while staying closely connected to the country’s pertinent issues.
