The impending introduction of a bill regarding the institutionalisation of same-sex marriage by the Greek government has ignited significant public discourse in Greece.

The Eteron-Institute for Research and Social Change, through comprehensive surveys, has shed light on evolving Greek perspectives.

The comparative analysis by project coordinator Yannis Albanis, comparing the “Radiography of Voters” (March 2023) and “Radiography of the Far Right” (October 2023) surveys, has unveiled noteworthy results.

Albanis notes a notable rise in Greek sympathy towards same-sex marriage over the past few decades.

Survey results indicate widespread support for same-sex marriage, with a distinct opposition to procreation.

Those leaning left exhibit positive views on both marriage and procreation.

Conversely, among New Democracy voters, negative responses on marriage hold a slight lead, while on procreation, they constitute an overwhelming majority.

Demographic analysis reveals that women and younger generations express more positivity toward same-sex marriage compared to men and older demographics.

Education plays a role, with higher education graduates significantly more supportive of LGBTQ+ rights than secondary school graduates.

Residents of Attica also show more openness to institutionalising same-sex marriage compared to other regions.

Examining political affiliations, SYRIZA voters lead in positive responses, followed by those of the KKE.

Notably, voters from various other parties express negative sentiments in significant percentages.

PASOK, ND, Niki, “Spartans,” and “Hellenic Solution” voters lean against the institutionalization of same-sex marriage.

Despite growing support, achieving cross-partisan consensus becomes crucial for the government, as a substantial number of ND’s MPs are expected to oppose the reform.

Notable figures, including Minister of State Makis Voridis and former PM Antonis Samaras, have already declared their opposition.

While the bill is anticipated to pass, its impact on the ideological foundations of the current administration remains uncertain.
