Labor MP Maria Vamvakinou has earned a nomination for Crikey Person of the Year, recognising her courage, as well as several other politicians, for standing with the Greens in the calls for the government to support a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Member for Calwell is joined by fellow Labor Backbencher Fatima Payman and Nationals MP Mark Coulton in the nomination, with all three being honoured for joining the Greens Party in calling the government to support a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza War.

The politicians made their stance last month on November 16 in a press conference, carrying a petition from Australian medical professionals that was making the same demand that had gained over 40,000 signatures at the time.

The petition, which had gathered over 40,000 signatures at the time, was presented to the parliament and Ms Vamvakinou said at the time:

“This petition gives Australians an opportunity to tell this parliament that they too feel strongly about the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza.”

Crikey praised Ms Vamvakinou, Ms Payman and Mr Coulton for what they say took “a great deal of courage” in making their stance alongside the Greens.
