The pink Greek flag displayed at the General Consulate of Greece in New York is reportedly being withdrawn following the intervention of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis.

The flag was made by visual artist Georgia Lale to symbolise the issue of domestic violence and crimes that involve women as victims.

“The artwork is created from bed sheets donated by women that live in Greece. These women have seemingly little in common, but they have all lied on these sheets desperate and scared,” the press release reads.

“The majority of femicide victims are murdered in their homes and in their beds. Their lives end in the bed they make each morning. Their bed sheets absorb their blood,” the organisers of the exhibition said.

The issue was raised by the head of the “Νίκη” party (or “Victory”), Dimitris Natsios, during his speech in Parliament.

“Is it possible to present our flag in pink, to make fun of our national symbol? The flag changes colour only when it is dyed red by the blood of our people’s struggles,” Mr Natsios said.

It is worth noting that Georgia Lale has made a similar work with the American flag, having painted it blue as a symbol for women’s right to abortion.
