Renowned Greek singer Vassilis Karras, celebrated for his raspy voice and profound impact on the heavy laika music stage, passed away on Christmas Eve in Thessaloniki at the age of 70.

Born in Kokkinohori, Kavala, to Pontian parents, Karras born Vasilis Kesoglidis, moved to Thessaloniki at a young age, where he developed his musical talent and formed lasting friendships.

Karras married at the age of 20 and outside of music he was passionate about organic produce and PAOK, two side loves he poured into endlessly.

On Tuesday, December 26, at 9 in the morning (Greece time), his body will be transferred to the Holy Church of God’s Wisdom in Thessaloniki, where it will be available for viewing until 1 in the afternoon.

The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday at noon in his hometown, Kokkinohori, Kavala, fulfilling his last wish of being laid to rest in the place of his roots.

In a poignant post on the official page of the Vasilis Karras Friends Association, his passing is described as the end of an era, marking the departure of the greatest Greek folk singer of their time.

The post pays tribute to Karras’ generosity, humility, and his dedication to both his craft and the people around him.

The Hellenism of Australia knew Karras very well as he toured here several times.

The last tour Down Under was just last year topping a career that spanned 50 years.

Despite a valiant battle with cancer over the last year and a half, Karras left an indelible mark on Greek music.

The Association vows to continue presenting his artistic work and preserving the legacy he left behind, ensuring that future generations will know him through shared experiences.

In lieu of wreaths, the family requests support for the “Flame” Association of Parents of Children with Neoplastic Diseases, emphasising Karras’ compassionate nature beyond his musical contributions. The burial ceremony on Wednesday will be a testament to his profound impact, with the anti-wreath family supporting the Floga Children’s Association.
