After a 16-year anticipation, the Greek women’s national water polo team, led by the “silver” Olympian from Athens and 2011 world champion, is making a triumphant return to the Olympic Games after the 2008 Beijing event.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis celebrated the success of the Women’s Water Polo National Team with an online post:
“The Women’s Water Polo National Team won the bronze medal at the European Championship in Eindhoven, securing their participation in the Olympic Games! You made us all proud. Warm congratulations!”
In a decisive match against Italy, the Greek team emerged victorious with a 7-6 score, securing the historic bronze medal and the coveted ticket to Paris.
The Greek squad displayed exceptional defense, with Ioanna Stamatopoulou’s penalty saves contributing to the triumph.
Goals by Ntina Ntounou and Margarita Plevritou, coupled with a solid defense, propelled Greece to a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Despite Italy’s attempts to close the gap, a remarkable goal by Nikola Eleftheriadou sealed the victory for Greece, marking the end of a 16-year wait and earning them a spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
The Greek team showcased resilience, critical defenses, and strategic goals, making history in the European Championship.
Sofia Tornarou and Stefania Santa, unfortunately, missed a spot in the Greek lineup.
Paris now eagerly awaits both Greek water polo teams, celebrating a momentous achievement in the sport’s history.
