Stephen Laybutt, a former centre back who played for Sydney Olympic as well as Australia, has been celebrated for his career after he was found dead in Northern NSW bushland on Sunday night.

The 46-year-old former defender, who represented the Socceroos in 15 matches, was discovered by officers in bushland near the suburb of Cabarita after having last been seen in Casuarina on Friday evening.

Mr Laybutt, known by the nickname of “Tractor”, was a regular in the NSL and notably played 12 games for Sydney Olympic in 2002 among many other clubs like Newcastle Jets and Belgian sides Royal Excelsior Mouscron and KAA Gent.

Speaking to the ABC, Football NSW CEO John Tsatsimas expressed the sincere effect Mr Laybutt had on the Australian football community.

“Stephen had massive impact on all the teams he represented not only in New South Wales, but also at the national and international level,” Mr Tsatsimas said.

“Those who knew him and were associated with him know the type of fantastic character he was. He will live long in our memories.”

Football Australia released a statement praising the Wollongong-raised centre back, with CEO James Johnson praising him for his dedication, skill and spirit as a player.

“His contributions to the Socceroos, especially during the OFC Nations Cup victories and the Sydney 2000 Olympics, have left a lasting legacy in our football community,” Mr Johnson said.

“We remember Stephen not just for his accomplishments on the field but also for his character and the positive influence he had on those around him.”

The Football Australia CEO concluded the statement by saying: “He will forever be remembered as part of the Socceroos family and will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time”.

Mr Laybutt retired from the sport back in 2008 due to an ankle injury and made headlines after his career when he came out as gay.

Sydney Olympic also added to the many messages for their former player by resharing Football NSW’s post on the unfortunate news and adding the caption “RIP Stephen Laybutt ‘Tractor”.
