The 2024 Greek Community Cup officially kicked off this past Sunday, with the first four games at Heatherton FC giving the crowd plenty of excitement.

The tournament begun with a clash between Malvern City and Heidelberg United, which was the thriller of the weekend.

In a tightly fought out contest, Malvern City secured a 3-2 win in the final moments with a goalkeeping save.

For the second game of the day, East Kew (Olympiakos) faced off against Altona East Phoenix (Paok), with the former emerging as 3-0 winners in a highly entertaining spectacle.

Defending champions South Melbourne FC demonstrated last year was no fluke, showcasing their prowess in a 3-0 victory of Kingston FC.

However, it wasn’t a one-sided affair, as the underdog team created opportunities where they could, but alas, could not capitalise.

Hellas underlined their status as one of the favourites, while Kingston FC were commended for their effort against the reigning champions.

Concluding the action-packed first day was a dominant display from Oakleigh Cannons FC against South Springvale FC, who notched a 5-0 win.

Reflecting on the first round of the tournament, vice president of the Greek Community of Melbourne Michael Karamito shared his enthusiasm.

“The Greek Community Cup kicked off spectacularly with all eight teams passionately competing. The crowds turned up in troves and everyone enjoyed the commencement of the tournament.

“We look forward to witnessing more thrilling matches in the following weeks.”

The action returns tomorrow night with Oakleigh Cannons taking on South Melbourne at 7pm, followed by Malvern City and Altona East Phoenix facing off at 8.30pm.
