As the 2024 Greek Community Cup unfolds at Heatherton FC, the soccer pitch becomes a stage for action and talent following the gripping matches that transpired on January 17 and 18.
“The GCM takes great pride in hosting this event, as it revives an element that has been absent from our cultural, social, and sporting calendar. We are thrilled about what we have witnessed so far,” said Bill Papastergiadis, OAM, President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM).
On Wednesday 17 January, Oakleigh Cannons FC played against South Melbourne FC (4-1). Oakleigh Cannons FC dominated, securing a commanding 4-1 victory.
Malvern City FC faced Altona East Phoenix SC (2-0) with Malvern City FC showcasing their skill with a solid 2-0 win.
On Thursday 18 January Kingston City FC treated fans to a thrilling 3-1 win against South Springvale FC while Heidelberg United FC asserted their dominance with a 2-0 victory over East Kew FC.
Michael Karamitos, GCM Vice President, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the commitment to the youth: “This tournament serves as a testament to the existence of our community, demonstrating that it is here for the youth.”

With the dust settling, current group leaders are:
Group A: Malvern City FC (Followed by: Heidelberg United FC)
Group B: Oakleigh Cannons FC (Followed by: South Melbourne FC)
Leonidas Vlahakis, GCM Cultural Committee Chair, highlighted the tournament’s significance in community building, stating, “This tournament is not merely a series of matches; it is a shared experience that resonates with the heart of the GCM.”
Dr. Jim Bossinakis, GCM Vice President, expressed enthusiasm for the tournament’s success.
“Beyond the thrilling goals and strategic maneuvers, the tournament serves as a nexus for the community to come together,” he added.
Chris Sikavitsas, GCM Board Member, recognised the enduring legacy of Greeks in soccer, saying, “It’s truly heartening to witness that legacy persisting.”
Looking forward, the excitement continues with upcoming matches on Sunday, 21 January.
Malvern City FC faces East Kew at 3:30pm, followed by Altona East Phoenix SC taking on Heidelberg United FC at 5pm.
