From January 26 to 28, an online international conference saw record participation, marking a significant milestone in global academic collaboration. Co-organised by institutions spanning three continents, the event showcased a diverse partnership.

The conference was a collaborative effort between the Greek Language Institute of the Centre for Research and Innovation “TIMENOS” at the University of Western Macedonia in Greece, the Education Office of the Greek Consulate in Johannesburg, and the Modern Greek Studies Programme of the Department of MCCALL at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, received overwhelming support. Under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports, and the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event attracted participants from around the globe.

The Macquarie University Foundation for Modern Greek Studies served as one of the official sponsors, underscoring the significance of the conference on an international scale.

A total of 130 presentations were delivered during the conference, featuring contributions from academics, PhD candidates, postgraduate students, as well as educators specializing in teaching Modern Greek as a second/foreign language abroad, and those instructing Greek language to culturally diverse students within Greece. The remarkable turnout from universities, schools, and educational institutions across four continents highlighted the event’s widespread appeal and relevance.

Participating institutions included universities such as the University of Western Macedonia, the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, and the University of Crete from Greece. Australian representatives included the Modern Greek Studies Programs of Macquarie University, La Trobe University, Charles Darwin University, and Flinders University. Notable African participants included the SAHETI School and Alexandria University. European representation came from institutions like the University of Nicosia, University of Strasbourg, and University of Barcelona. American and Canadian contributions were made by esteemed universities like McGill University, University of Chicago, and Simon Fraser University.

The conference proceedings, including official greetings, speeches, and introductions, were broadcast on the event’s YouTube channel, ensuring accessibility to interested parties worldwide.

The record participation and diverse representation underscored the conference’s significance as a platform for scholarly exchange and global cooperation in the field of Modern Greek studies.
