The first matchday of the new season is now in the past. The performance of the “Greek” teams left a sweet taste in the mouths of football fans. It’s now time for the second round of the new season, which will feature matches of enormous interest.
Heidelberg United – Oakleigh Cannons
This week in Heidelberg West, all lights are on for the first “Greek” derby of the 2024 season.
Two historic clubs, both starting the season strong, will meet on Friday night (16/2) with the sole goal of winning three points.
In their first match of the year, the home team, Alexandros, impressed with a convincing performance against Altona Magic, easily taking away the three points.
Similarly, the Cannons had a trouble-free night, defeating Manningham United with a score of 3-0, and smoothly overcoming Coach Karkaletsis’ team.
We contacted the coach of Heidelberg United, John Anastasiadis, in order to secure a comment from him before the important match.
“Our team needs to be careful with defensive duties and be effective in our attack if we want to achieve a good result in our tough match against Oakleigh. We are working hard this week on improving in the area of missing scoring chances, after facing several failed attempts against Altona. We have high hopes that the fans will enjoy a beautiful game of football.” said the experienced coach.
Hopefully, the two opponents will give us a ninety minute match filled with suspense and a football spectacle.
Moreland City – South Melbourne
This week, South Melbourne travel to Fawkner to face Moreland City.
The “Greek” side started off the new season strongly, emerging victorious in the Original Melbourne derby against the Melbourne Knights.
Coach Quintas has been focused on helping the new players acclimate to their new working environment and adjusting to the needs of the Argentinian technician.
This includes learning the preferred style of play and getting acquainted with their new teammates, as the team has undergone a total renewal in recent months.
Despite starting off the season with a 1-0 away defeat against Green Gully, Moreland City showed a promising performance, giving hope for the rest of the championship.
South will need to be serious and disciplined on the field if they want to continue their winning streak in the championship.
Melbourne Knights – Port Melbourne Sharks
This week, Port Melbourne who is following South Melbourne’s schedule, will face a tough task as they take on one of the best teams in the division, the Melbourne Knights.
In their first game against South Melbourne, the Knights were defeated, but they also presented themselves well, circulated the ball nicely, and demonstrated that it is only a matter of time before they start playing effective football to secure victories and points.
The people of Port Melbourne see this match as a prime opportunity to showcase their capability of achieving great things this year.
If they hope to make an impact in this year’s championship, they must perform well in matches like this against the Croatian team. Let’s hope they succeed!
NPL VICTORIA 1
Extremely tough assignments await the “Greek” teams in the second tier of Victorian football this weekend.
The start is made on Friday night (16/2), as Northcote City will face Western United.
The Blue and White suffered a painful home defeat in their first match against Melbourne Victory, putting a negative note on their premiership debut.
Kingston City welcomes Melbourne City this Monday (21/2).
The new season has started ideally for the Red and Whites, and they are determined to continue in this manner.
It is certain that the “Greek” team can triumph in this match. They simply need to display the same competitive attitude they had against Western United last weekend.
Brunswick City will travel to the west of the city to face the tough North Geelong Warriors.
The “Greek” club is hoping to secure their first victory of the season after drawing 1-1 with Eastern Lions in the previous match.
An away mission also awaits Bentleigh Greens on this second match day of the new season as they will be traveling to Bulleen to play against the local Lions.
On Saturday (10/2), Langwarrin handed a heavy 3-0 defeat to The Greens, who will now strive to salvage something positive from the match aginst Bulleen.
If the club starts the season with two consecutive defeats, it risks falling into a negative and introverted state.
