The much-anticipated Ouzo Festival, a vibrant celebration of Aegean Greek culture in Melbourne set to take place on 3 March, has been cancelled for 2024.
The event, will not take place this year due to the sale of the Bayswater property where it was traditionally held, Mr John Karanikolas, president of the Palesviaki Enosis told Neos Kosmos.

Neither the amount nor the buyers have been disclosed so far.

Settlement for the sale is expected within the next few weeks, prompting the decision to cancel this year’s festival. The Cultural Center of Lesvos, covering an area of 3.22 hectares, is located on Waldheim Street and was expected to be sold for more than 8 million dollars.

For the time being, the Palesviaki Enosis has not found another building to house its activities.

“This will happen as soon as the process is completed, and we receive the money,” Mr Karanikolas told Neos Kosmos.

The decision to sell was made by an overwhelming majority of the General Assembly of the Association’s members.

The Palesviaki Enosis of Melbourne and Victoria Executive and General Committee, organisers of the festival, expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the cancellation. However, they reassured members and friends that the Ouzo Festival, along with other traditional celebrations, will continue annually once a new venue is secured. This ensures that the community can continue to enjoy these cultural events in the future.

“The Association will proceed with the purchase of another building, more modern and central, which can better serve the needs of our members,” he explained.

The Ouzo Festival, known for its lively atmosphere and authentic Aegean Greek experience, typically features live music, dancing, and, of course, plenty of ouzo.
Attendees enjoy mingling with friends under the trees while experiencing the flavours of Greece.

The festival also offers special areas for children, allowing parents to enjoy the festivities while ensuring the younger generations are entertained.
