The Piraeus giants have booked their place into the Europa Conference League (ECL) knockouts after beating Ferencvaros in Budapest.

Olympiacos recorded a 0-1 away triumph on Friday morning (AEDT) to add to their 1-0 victory last week in the first leg, continuing the European journey of the “red-whites” for this season.

The Piraeus outfit found the match’s lone goal in the 45th minute after a VAR check found that centre half Samy Mmaee had handled the ball in his box.

Striker Ayoub El Kaabi, the goal scorer from last week, stepped up to the spot and slotted his penalty into the bottom left to give his club an excellent two-goal lead on aggregate.

Olympiacos did well enough in the contest to keep the pressure on Ferencvaros, not allowing the Hungarian side enough opportunity to get back into the tie as they resigned themselves to a European exit.

The “red-whites” will now join PAOK in the ECL Round of 16 that will commence from March 7, with the draw for this round to take place on Friday evening.

The Thessaloniki giants will take confidence in being among the eight seeded clubs for this draw while Olympiacos is among the unseeded teams and so will almost certainly be paired up with a very hard opponent on paper.

As the only remaining Hellenic outfits in Europe, PAOK and Olympiacos will both be eager to go deep in the competition especially given this year’s ECL Final will be held at AEK’s “Agia Sophia” Stadium.
