After finally ascending into top position, the pressure is on AEK to maintain their placement atop the ladder as they prepare for a tricky fixture against aspiring play-offs club Lamia.
Enosi travels to face the Fthiotida club at “Athanasios Diakos” ground on Sunday morning (AEDT) in the Greek Super League’s 24th round, and the defending premiers need to record maximum points to guarantee they remain in first.
The game will not be easy for AEK as Lamia have proven to be a very hard team to beat, particularly at home, and their spirits will be extra high after managing to draw 2-2 against Panathinaikos last round.
The “Trifylli” will be hopeful that Lamia can cause another upset to potentially allow them to go into first place, though they will need to beat Kifisia in their contest at “Leoforos” Stadium on Monday for it to matter.
The Greens are coming off an epic Cup semi-final with PAOK midweek wherein they advanced via penalties, and they will be hopeful that this bout proves to be far less stressful as Kifisia currently sits in last place.
PAOK will likewise be seeking a triumph in their away fixture against Panetolikos to keep on the toes of AEK.
The Thessaloniki giants, along with Panathinaikos, are only one point behind the league leaders, meaning the results of every match could drastically alter the ladder and so victories in these easier matches on paper are even more valuable at this stage.
Olympiacos hosts Asteras Tripolis at “Georgios Karaiskakis” ground and the Piraeus outfit will be reliant on some endurance from their squad to secure maximum points after having to play a midweek European game.
Aris takes on Volos at home and the Thessaloniki club will be motivated to perform as a win here would guarantee their place in the play-offs.
Giannina takes on OFI at home with the Epirutans striving for a second consecutive success to widen the gap between themselves and Kifisia (who they are currently equal on points with).
Panserraikos is preparing for a visit from Atromitos in the other Sunday morning game and both teams have a lot to gain by winning this clash.
The two sides have identical records and currently occupy ninth and tenth positions with 23 points.
A victory to either team could take them as far as nine points away from the relegation spots, a cushion they would no doubt love to have heading into the play-outs.
