In celebration of Women’s History Month and Greek Independence Day, the inspiring story of Lascarina Bouboulis comes alive in a newly issued e-book, and reprinted hardcover and paperback editions.
Author Katherine Kaye’s journey to uncover the legacy of this Greek heroine began with a chance visit to the tranquil island of Spetses.

Inspired by her roots, she embarked on a mission to shed light on the remarkable life of Lascarina Bouboulis.
Kaye’s interest in Bouboulis was sparked during a visit to Spetses in 1984, where she realised the potential of Bouboulis’ story to inspire girls worldwide.
This historical novel invites readers to explore the courageous spirit of a remarkable heroine, resonating with themes of freedom, determination, and the power of unity.
Despite limited English resources on Bouboulis, Kaye’s determination led her to translate a Greek novel with her grandmother, delving into the life of this fearless woman.
Although initially drafted decades ago, Kaye’s manuscript was revisited and rewritten in 2021, resulting in the captivating young adult novel, “Sailing with the Wind of Freedom: Lascarina Bouboulis and the War for Greek Independence.”
The novel’s reprint revolves around the relevance of Bouboulis’ story today, highlighting themes of nationalism and diversity.
Kaye skillfully addresses complex themes such as national unity and gender limitations, making them accessible to young readers with the help of illustrator Dmitri Andreyev. While targeted at ages 12 to 18, the book appeals to readers of all ages interested in modern Greek history.
Proceeds from sales of the book benefit the Bouboulina Museum on Spetses and the American Farm School in Thessaloniki.
