The Hellenic Women’s Federation of Victoria marked its 20th anniversary with a special celebration on International Women’s Day. The event, held at Normanby House last Sunday, was attended by over 200 guests, including special VIPs and community members.
Among the distinguished guests were Andrew Giles, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs of Australia; Leila Alloush, CEO of Victorian Arabic Social Services; Lina Hussein, Project Officer at Victorian Arabic Social Services; Ange Kenos, State Executive member at the Victorian RSL; and Anthea Sidiropoulos, Vice President of the Greek Community of Melbourne and a renowned singer-songwriter.
The highlight of the event was the honouring of Sofia Mastoris OAM, the founding president of the Hellenic Women’s Federation of Victoria.

Her dedication and contributions to the Greek-Australian community were celebrated with heartfelt speeches and presentations.
Mary Lalios, President of the Federation, spoke passionately about Sofia Mastoris’ vision for equality and representation of Hellenic women in Australia.
She highlighted Sofia’s achievements, including her role in founding the Protomagia Festival in Melbourne, her leadership at the Greek Women’s Community of Whittlesea, and her volunteer work for various organisations, including the Cancer Council and the Grace of Mary Aged Care facility.

In her speech, Sofia Mastoris OAM expressed gratitude for the support she has received over the years and reflected on the Federation’s journey.
She recounted the early days of the Federation, its growth, and the meaningful events and initiatives it has undertaken, such as the planting of an olive tree at Maroondah Park as a symbol of love and peace.
