A group of Greek parliamentarians will attend this year’s National Day parade celebrations at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, which will feature approximately 70 sections.
The parade takes place within the framework of the celebratory events of the 100 Years of the Archdiocese of Australia, and is also dedicated to the 50 years of the illegal occupation of Cyprus. It also coincides with the 40 years of the sister cities relationship between Thessaloniki and Melbourne.
The delegation of the Hellenic Parliament’s Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Expatriates, include Konstantinos Vlasis, member of parliament for Arcadia and former deputy minister of foreign affairs for the Diaspora; Theodora Tzakri, member of parliament for Pella from SYRIZA and first vice-president of the Diaspora Hellenism Committee; Evangelia Liakouli, member of parliament for Larissa from PASOK-KINAL and second vice-president of the Diaspora Hellenism Committee; and Asimina Skondra, member of parliament for Karditsa from New Democracy.
The Ambassador of Greece to Australia, Stavros Venizelos, and the High Commissioner of Cyprus, Antonis Sammoutis, will also attend the event.
Throughout their five-day visit, the parliamentarians will engage in official meetings with ecclesiastical, consular, political, and community authorities, with the aim to further strengthen the bonds between the two countries.
Antonis Tsourdalakis, President of the Committee – who alongside organising committee secretary, Natasha Spanou, who is stepping down after this year’s parade – thanked the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Konstantinos Tasoulas, for accepting the invitation to send a four-member delegation, “honouring the Greek Community of Melbourne and our National Regeneration”.
Speaking to Neos Kosmos, Tsourdalakis invited “all members of the community to join us in celebrating this special occasion”.
He further extended his gratitude to the sponsors of the parade, including the Stavros Siolas family, the Athanasios Liakopoulos family, as well as the families of Nikos Kanelakis and Kostas Dimitriou.
The committee is looking for volunteers to assist during the parade. Interested individuals are requested to contact greeknationalday@gmail.com. Volunteers must have a Working with Children Check and attend a special informational meeting.
