Former Prince Nikolaos of Greece and his wife Tatiana Blatnik have announced their decision to dissolve their marriage after 13 years together. In a translated statement, the couple expressed the difficulty of their decision, as well as their deep appreciation, respect, and love for each other throughout the years.

The pair, who do not have any children together, will continue to reside in Greece and aim to maintain a friendship despite their new relationship status.

“Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana, after fourteen years of living together, have decided to dissolve their marriage,” the translated statement read. “Both express the difficulty of this decision, the deep appreciation and respect they have for each other, but also the love with which they have walked all these years.”

The statement stressed that their relationship in the future will be based on the same values of respect and understanding that have guided them thus far, with the support of their families.

The announcement comes as a surprise to some royal observers, as just two months ago, Tatiana, 43, and Nikolaos, 54, appeared together at a thanksgiving service for ex-King Constantine II, Nikolaos’ father and the last king of Greece.

The couple was seen arriving at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle arm in arm for the February 2024 service.

Prince William, Nikolaos’ godson, was expected to attend the ceremony but had to change his plans due to his wife Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis.

Despite marrying into royalty, Tatiana has always maintained a down-to-earth approach to life.

In a 2016 interview with Vogue, she described her daily life as “very simple,” involving work, shopping at the supermarket, cooking, walking her dog, and enjoying the warm reception from the Greek people, who she says have welcomed her “with open arms”.

Reflecting on her marriage Tatiana said that titles were not important to her.

“I do not feel like a princess,” she said after her wedding in August 2010.

“I do not feel that I married a prince, with a title. Well actually, yes, he is my prince, but nothing more. It’s a privilege, and an honour, to be part of the family.”
