The Network of Greek Women of Melbourne Victoria HELIADES presented the “History of Traditional Greek Dances and Their Evolution” lecture, held at the EEAMA building in Preston last Sunday drawing a large crowd of Greek culture enthusiasts.

The lecture provided a fascinating blend of knowledge and entertainment delivered by Victoria Papazoglou who dove into the history and evolution of traditional Greek dances.

In her opening remarks, Niki Mantziari-Garai, president of the Network, expressed gratitude to EEAMA President Loukas Rizopoulos and Elizabeth Kalaitzi for their cooperation.

She also thanked the Board of Directors of HELIADES for their support, highlighting the contributions of Vice President Sylvia Kourkouveli and Secretary Fotoula Sahar.

“Congratulations to the Hellenic Women’s Network HELIADES, for organising an exceptional event on the history and development of the traditional dances of Greece,” Mantziari-Garai said.

A group of fifteen dancers from the Dance School of Christos Konstantinidis showcased characteristic dances with enthusiasm and skill, creating a memorable experience for all.

From Crete to Asia Minor, the event took attendees on a cultural journey through various regions of Greece.

“Dances from the Aegean islands are known for their speed and light movements. Traditional Cretan dances are fast, athletic, and require stamina. Pontic dancing is characterized by sharp movements. Pan-Hellenic dances include the Syrtos, Kalamatianos, Ballos, Zeibekiko, and Hasapiko,” Mantziari-Garai added.

Although the lecture was free, donations were collected to support the completion of works at the Holy Monastery of Panagia Gorgoepikoos in Geelong.

The success of the event has led to plans for future lectures, seminars, and workshops, demonstrating the ongoing commitment to celebrating and preserving Greek culture in Melbourne.
