PAOK’s premiership hopes are on the line as they prepare for an absolute must-win contest against rivals AEK, with the rest of the league also looking to them to add another twist in this season’s dramatic title race.
The Thessaloniki giants host Enosi at “Toumba” Stadium on Monday morning (AEST) in the eighth round of the Greek Super League in the ultimate make-or-break fixture for the “black-whites”.
Anything less than three points would see PAOK fall too far behind in the title race, meaning they have to go all out in the clash.
AEK comes in with the advantage of knowing that a win would all but guarantee them of the league title, which is all the motivation they need to turn up and upset PAOK in front of their faithful.
Panathinaikos will also be praying for a PAOK victory, though their first job will be trying to beat Aris at “Leoforos” Stadium.
The Greens will be desperate to recover quickly from their midweek loss to AEK, which greatly impacted their championship chances, as they strive to keep themselves ever so slightly in the mix for the title.
Aris, meanwhile, will be keen to deliver a psychological blow to the “Trifylli” ahead of their Cup Final next month, meaning they will give everything they have to secure the win.
Olympiacos competes with Lamia at “Georgios Karaiskakis” ground in the other fixture as they look to now shore up a top three spot and guarantee themselves a place in the qualifying rounds of Europe’s club competitions next season.
Kifisia takes on last-placed Giannina at home on Sunday morning in the sixth (and penultimate) round of the play-outs, needing maximum points to try save themselves from relegation.
The hosts are currently one point away from safety and so have a hope of escaping the bottom two places if they can muster a win.
Volos, the team just above Kifisia, will equally be striving for a success as they prepare to face Panserraikos at home.
The Magnesia side will have to be wary of their opponents, who last round became the first club in the relegation group to mathematically confirm their place in the top division next season.
Panetolikos also goes into this matchday feeling the need for victory as they challenge Atromitos at home, with the Agrinio outfit only two points ahead of Kifisia (a margin that could be reduced if results do not go in their favour).
Asteras Tripolis battles OFI at home in a game more about pride than anything else, with each club on 34 points and no doubt eager to go past the other on the ladder.
