On May 15, Elizabeth Bouras celebrated her 100th birthday, a milestone that reflects a life rich in resilience, love, and family.

Born Elizabeth Karavias on May 15, 1924, in the village of Panayoula in the Aitoloakarnania region of Greece, Elizabeth’s life journey is a testament to strength and perseverance.

Early life and marriage

Elizabeth married Nicholas Bouras from Kandila, Greece, in 1944. She lived through World War II, witnessing her husband fight alongside the Allies. After surviving the war, Elizabeth and Nicholas started their family, having five children in Greece.

In 1956, Nicholas left Greece to seek a better life in Australia. On January 7, 1960, their eldest son George, then 15, joined him to work and secure a home for the family.

Elizabeth and the remaining four children embarked on their journey to Australia in October 1961.

During their voyage on the Patris, Elizabeth was awarded for maintaining the tidiest cabin, showcasing her remarkable tidiness and organisational skills.

The family settled into their new home, and in 1965, they welcomed a sixth child, born in Melbourne.

Her legacy

As the family matriarch, Elizabeth witnessed her children grow and establish their own families.

She has been blessed with 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, all of whom will join her in celebrating her 100th birthday.

Adding to the joyous occasion is the surprise arrival of her eldest daughter, Sotiria, from Greece to partake in the festivities.
