Next month the Axion Esti and Masterworks concert heads to Queensland in what will be the largest number of Greek voices ever on a Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) stage.
The event will bring multiple generations of the Greek community together in song on the Concert Hall stage when three local Greek choirs alongside the QPAC Chamber Choir make up a 90-voice chorus.
The Junior Ellinikes Fones Choir, Ellinikes Fones and the GOC Care Choir Fones will accompany international vocalist Dimitris Basis, Greek Australian conductor George Ellis, cantor George Karantonis.
Greek Australian actor Tony Nikolakopoulos will provide narration of the concert.
91-year-old Apostolos Belas and seven-year-old Milana Sotiris will also make their Concert Hall debuts as part of their respective Greek community choirs.
Belas from GOC Care Fones spoke about the opportunity in a promotional interview.
“I am proud to be part of Axion Esti and I thank God that I’m here at 91 years of age,” he said.
“Every time Dimitris Basis comes to Australia, I come and watch the concert but this is the first time I will be on stage.
“Mikis Theodorakis’ music, we have been listening to for many years, many, many years.”
A 35-piece orchestra will also accompany the soloists and the 90-voice combined choir bringing joy to a crowd of both music lovers and Greek Australians.
In a media release, QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas AM said they aim to present a diverse and inclusive program that reflects the stories and cultures of Queensland communities.
“Connecting with our multicultural communities is a key priority for us,” he said.
“Concerts like these that celebrate culture allow communities to see their heritage reflected on stage, reconnect those within the community to their roots, and also provide opportunity for broader audiences to widen their understanding and appreciation for different cultures.”
It is the first time the work of Mikis Theodorakis and Odysseas Elytis has been performed at such a scale in Australia and the first time in Queensland.
