Lamda Development, the company behind the Ellinikon project in Greece, was named one of the 100 most influential companies in the world in 2024 by TIME magazine.

The $8 billion project is now under construction about 20 minutes from the Acropolis in Athens and is the largest urban reclamation project in Europe.

It will see the Athens Riviera, where there used to be an international airport and a 2004 Olympics site, transform to include a 1km-long public beach and one of the largest coastal parks in the world.

The amount of green space per Athens resident will project will double once completed.

The development will consist of thousands of apartments, shopping areas, hotels, offices, entertainment facilities, a university, and new infrastructure like electric vehicle stations and rainwater capture systems.

Financed privately by Lamda, it is expected to generate thousands of jobs, attract tourists, and contribute 2.4 per cent to Greece’s GDP.

TIME described the project as revitalising Greece.

In a statement, the company said the recognition is an honour that confirms its continuous commitment to creating model, innovative projects to the benefit of Greece and the Greeks.

“It’s a project that is putting Greece on the map for the right reason,” CEO Odisseas Athanasiou said.
