The Greek Language Teachers Association of Victoria held its annual conference on Sunday at the facilities of St. John’s College with an impressive turnout, including educators from most private, public, and community schools in Melbourne participating.

The day’s activities included music, dance, discussions, workshops, and lectures from notable personalities with extensive knowledge, experience, and influence in the educational field.

Sofia Angelidaki, a detached educator from the Greek Ministry of Education, who has attended numerous seminars both in Greece and Australia said that it was one of the most pleasant and well-organised conferences of its kind she had attended.

“Educators felt empowered in our challenging work with knowledge of new methodological approaches,” said Angelidaki, adding that “for the first time, perhaps, there was strong interest from the majority of educators in forming children’s and adults’ choirs throughout Melbourne, focusing on Greek songs.”

“We are grateful to have had presenters at our Conference who dedicated time to share their rich topics and knowledge. Educators left the Conference filled with new strategies and techniques to enhance the teaching of the Greek language in their classrooms,” the Association’s president, Despina Saranti, told Neos Kosmos.

“It was a wonderful day full of smiles, collaboration, and many interactive workshops. We thank the stores that attended, such as the Language International Bookstore, The Greek Bookshop, Little Anna, and Stelakis. The event was a true celebration of the dedication and passion of Greek language educators,” Saranti said.

The association president also extended the organisation’s thanks to St. John’s College and its staff for hosting the event.

The Greek Language Teachers Association will also participate in a seminar for parents organised by the Pharos Revitalising Greek team on Sunday 9 June (12pm-3.30pm) at the Greek Centre.

The seminar, titled ‘Raising Bilingual Children’ will be presented by Professor Joseph Lo Bianco.
