Alexandros Giannadakis, philologist and Greek Community of Melbourne coordinator of ancient Greek courses and adult Greek courses, has unexpectedly passed away.

The news was shared by the GCM with a heartfelt post on Facebook.

“With the heaviest heart, the Greek Community of Melbourne farewells one of the most beloved members of our community, our dearest colleague and friend, Alexandro Giannadaki, who passed away unexpectedly,” the announcement said, ending with “Farewell, Alexandre, our sincere condolences to your family … You leave behind a legacy of great work and an unfulfilled void.”

Alexandros was born in Crete and following his graduation with honours in Ancient and modern Greek language and pedagogics from the University of Crete he ventured into working as a philologist for many years in Greece.

He came to Melbourne in 2004 as a seconded teacher to contribute his skills towards the enhancement of Greek language to the community.

In 2012, Giannadakis worked as a lecturer at Monash University and since 2013 continued his educational work as an associate of the GCM, in the role of teacher and coordinator of the ancient Greek and adult programmes.

Deeply knowledgeable in Greek language and history, for 19 years he worked tirelessly, with dedication and passion, serving his great love of language and culture.

An excellent collaborator and teacher, he was distinguished for his ethos, his kindness and respect towards colleagues and students, his good humour and the quality of work.
