Preschool children took a remarkable journey through Greek history last Thursday as part of the Museum Education program focused on Digenis Akritas. The program was co-organised by the ELA Greek Language Program for Toddlers, part of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) Schools, and the Educational Institution ‘Hellenism of Anatolia – from the Aegean Sea to Pontos’.
Designed for children aged 18 months to 4 years, the program was an interactive introduction to the legendary hero Digenis Akritas. The young participants, along with their parents, explored the exhibition ‘In the Footsteps of Digenis Akritas’ through a series of activities.
The hourly Museum Education program allowed children to immerse themselves in Greek culture and history.
They listened to the story of Digenis Akritas in Greek, participated in music-kinetic activities, created art crafts, engaged in a treasure hunt, and enjoyed dancing and singing. This multi-sensory approach helped bring the ancient tale to life, making history tangible for the young learners.
“It is very important for us to initiate our young students from the first years of their lives into the wonderful world of Greek history and culture through personal experience and play. The response of the children is incredible; it fills us with joy and strength to continue our efforts and develop similar initiatives and collaborations in the future,” said Mrs Soumi, co-organiser of the event and coordinator of the GCM program ELA Greek Language Program for Toddlers’.
