The biennial conference of the Modern Greek Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand (MGSAANZ) is set to return after a six-year absence, addressing various topics including the future of Modern Greek studies.

The conference, presented by the MGSAANZ and the department of Modern Greek Studies at the University of Sydney, is scheduled for the first time since 2018.

The conference will be convened by Professor Vrasidas Karalis and Associate Professor Anthony Dracopoulos and will be held on December 6-7th at the University of Sydney.

The conference has been given the title ‘After the crisis, where to? Discussing Modern Greek Studies in the age of uncertainty’.

Fitting with the theme, the organisers are opening it to all Australian academics, researchers, writers and cultural actors to participate in the upcoming event to discuss the events from the last six years and its impact on Modern Greek studies.

The conference is planning to address the teaching of Modern Greek language, the orientations of current academic research, the publishing of relevant literature and the appearance of new creative writing, together with other papers on politics, culture, art and society.

It is aiming to broaden its scope and perspective to cover research and cultural reconsiderations that take place in the Greek-Australian Diaspora and also in global Greek studies, including visual arts, literary writing, music and cultural performance.

Another component of the event will be discussions on books published both in Greek and English by Australian-based writers, as well as honouring the work and legacy of recently departed literary figures such as Dimitris Tsaloumas and Antigone Kefala.

The organisers stressed they remain open to suggestions about possible panel discussions and individual contributions.

The deadline for the submission of abstracts and proposals in 30 August, with anyone interested in participating asked to email either Professor Karalis or Associate Professor Dracopoulos.
