The Greek and Cypriot Social Welfare Centre held their annual celebration of the Kataklysmos/Penticosti on Sunday June 23.

Kataklysmos is celebrated in Cyprus 50 days after Easter by the seaside. The throwing of water on one another purifies the body. Many festivals and celebrations are held.

Held at St John College Gymnasium in Preston, the event featured live music and traditional dancing.

Greek Orthodox Archdiocese representative Father Phillip Papagiannopoulos commenced with a holy water ceremony, followed by the entertainment .

Various dance groups performed including Pegasus Dance Academy, Florina Aritstotelis Dance Group and St John’s College Dance Group.

It was not just a Hellenic affair, as other groups included Maya Dance (Salvadorian dance group), Glenbrae Celtic Dancers (Scottish dance group) and the Victoria Police Pipe Band.

Helen Emmanuel-Pras, President of the Greek and Cypriot Social Welfare Centre said the event was more successful than they expected.
She also gave special thanks to Anastasia Xenophontos, Treasurer of the Greek and Cypriot Social Welfare Centre, who is the “recipe” for their successful events and “the love and dedication we have bringing them to our community.”

Some notable attendees were two representatives of candidates for the City of Darebin upcoming council and Soteris Matis (Mavrommatis), former Bank Manager at Bank Of Sydney.
