Melbourne City FC have signed Australian U-23s International and Young Matilda, Alexia Apostolakis ahead on a two-year deal.

The young defender and one of Australia’s brightest up and coming talents departs Western Sydney Wanderers after three seasons, where she played 42 games in the A-League Women’s competition.

Joining ahead of the 2024/25 season and inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League, Apostolakis further strengthens head coach Dario Vidosic’s premiership-winning squad.

At 18-years-old, she has already represented Australia at both the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022 and most recently, the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2024.

The Greek Aussie started in each of Australia’s Asian Cup games, helping the Young Matildas win the Bronze Medal and secure a spot at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia later this year.

She has also represented Australia at U-23 level, and will be joining several teammates from her national duties at City.

“I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to join Melbourne City,” she said in media release.

“In my eyes, it’s a Club that is very dedicated to the culture and the players. It implements a style of football that is so unique and so dominant against its opponents, which I believe is the perfect environment for me to develop both as a footballer and as a person.

“I’m looking forward to embracing new learning experiences and challenges which I’m sure will come with the support of the coaches, staff and my new teammates. I can’t wait to get started.”

Head coach Vidosic added that the exciting young defender suits the way they play and will provide a huge boost to the squad.
