Maria Sakkari has reached the third round of Wimbledon with a straight set win over Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 7-5, 6-3.
The win sees the Greek avoid another early exit at Grand Slams, with the No 9 seed having not made the second week of a major since 2021.
Already, this is her best result since the 2023 Australian Open.
It was a fairly even matchup with both players winning their serve games but it was Sakkari who was able to break Rus’s serve twice, in the final game to claim the first set and in the eighth game of the second set to give her the chance to serve out the game.
The top ranked Greek women’s player is undefeated agaisnt Rus, having won all six of their head to head matches.
Sakkari will next face wildcard Emma Raducanu. The two have only previously met once at the 2021 US Open with the Brit winning that encounter.
