The 2024 National Youth Championships Girls’ Tournament for U15 and U16s is currently underway in Melbourne.

Kicking off on Wednesday July 3 at the Home of the Matildas at Latrobe University, the six-day campaign will culminate on Monday July 8.

Players and officials from Football Australia’s nine state and territory member federations have gathered to compete, including the Invitational XI, a team composed of talented Indigenous players from across Australia.

And with that some teams feature young Greek girls hoping to one day become the next football stars of Australia.

Some of the names playing are Zoe Panagopoulos (NSW Metro), Nikki Kastanos (South Australia), Alexis Pantazopoulos, Anastasia Kyriacou, Teah Kotsandis and Stephanie Katsikis (all playing for Victoria teams).

Even the match officiating team has some Greeks, with Angelique Katsalas and Daphne Gounaris from Football Victoria.

Referees are also being scouted to find the next generation of female match officials.

As the tournament progresses through the opening group stages, the quality of football has already caught the eye of even the most seasoned experts.

Two-time A-League Premiership and Championship-winning coach and Football Australia Chief Football Officer, Ernie Merrick OAM, has been impressed by the level of play.

“The quality of football just seems to improve so much every year. Lately, it’s been a real surprise because I didn’t think it could get much better, but the quality we’ve seen so far has been outstanding,” Merrick said in a Football Australia wrap up of day two.
