Students from Charles Darwin University in Australia recently visited Almopia Municipality in northern Greece as part of their “Destination Homeland” project.
The program began in Kalymnos, continued in Athens, and will conclude in Almopia on Wednesday, July 17 with a final stop in Thessaloniki on July 19.
Led by Professor George Frazis, the students, along with faculty staff, were welcomed by Deputy Mayor of Finance and Planning Olga Ollandezou, Deputy Mayor of Education, Sports, and Culture Petros Tsarknias, and Deputy Mayor of Administration, Health, and Social Welfare George Chatzidimitriadis.
During the visit, Professor Frazis highlighted the history of the program, under the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, the students’ studies, and the support from local entities and individuals since its inception in 2009.
The representatives of Almopia Municipality greeted the group and discussed potential future collaborations between the municipality and the university.
The students are participating in the 18th Summer Intensive Course in Greek Language and Culture, organised in the region since 2009 by Efstratios Poulos and his wife Angeliki Poulos.
In just three weeks, the students cover a semester’s worth of material, focusing on Greek language, history, and culture alongside research topics spanning a broad range, including Greek traditional music, Byzantine music, and visits to the historical museum of Kalymnos, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, the Acropolis Museum, and the museums of Pella, Vergina, Aigai, and the Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki.
