The contributions of The Hellenic Initiative Australia (THI) were in full focus in a reception in Athens, with the organisation recognised for their work in the last decade while also announcing two new grants to signify its ongoing commitment.

The reception was hosted by Australia’s Ambassador to Greece, Alison Duncan on 23 July, saw friends, supporters, honorary council members and partner charities of THI Australia combine to honour the organisation and the impact its work has had in Greece.

Ambassador Duncan applauded THI Australia and the broader Greek Australia community for their efforts and support to vulnerable communities across Greece.

She spoke enthusiastically on their work, having previous volunteering experience with THI Australia’s partner charities like Boroume Saving Food Saving Lives and Emfasis Foundation.

THI Australia Director George Giovas stated that they “are grateful for the strong and supportive relationship THI Australia has enjoyed with the Australian Embassy in Greece”.

He also spoke on some of THI Australia’s major achievements in the past decade, with the organisation marking the occasion with the announcement of two new grants to Desmos Non Profit Foundation (AU$65,000) and Protes Yles Theatre Group (10,000 euro).

The grant to Desmos, one of the first charities in Greece that THI Australia partnered with, will support their Palliative Care Program delivered by Nosilia.

Lena Papalexopoulou, Vice-President of Desmos, expressed sincere appreciation for the ongoing aid provided by the organisation.

“THI Australia’s significant assistance allows us to keep providing free of charge, holistic relief care at home to hundreds of vulnerable patients suffering from chronic and life-threatening diseases, while helping their families too,” Ms Papalexopoulou said.

“We are truly grateful for this support, which brings us one step closer to the goal of enabling every patient in Greece to receive the healthcare support that they need.”

The grant to Protes Yles represents the introduction of THI Australia’s new Arts and Culture category, and will contribute to the production of two theatrical plays, “The Mirror” and “The Sea Wall.”

The organisation is concentrating some of its resources on fostering cultural growth and employment opportunities for artists as Greece’s arts sector continues to recover from the economic crisis.

‘THI Australia’s generous support will make a significant difference to our productions. Equally important is the opportunity for beneficiaries of THI Australia’s programs to enjoy these performances,’ said Christos Lygas, Artistic Director of Protes Yles.

The organisation will continue to celebrate their 10-year milestone with a Gala Dinner at the Fullerton Hotel in Sydney on 25 November 2024.
