The subject of Constantine P. Cavafy’s poetry is set to take centre stage in an upcoming seminar by the Greek Community of Melbourne as they delve deep into how he melds Greek history into his work.

The lecture, titled ‘The poet of the diaspora – Kavafis and Greek history’, will be delivered in Greek by Associate Professor Michail Bakoyiannis on Thursday 8 August, 7pm, at the Greek Centre.

It is part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the GCM, with this event being hosted jointly with the Modern Greek Studies Program at La Trobe University.

Cavafy notably was a poet of the Greek diaspora, having lived most of his life and written almost all his works in Alexandria, with Dr Bakoyiannis’ lecture to offer profound insights into his work and its historical context.

Dr Bakoyiannis has researched and published extensively on Modern Greek Literature, with the academic from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki using his expertise to examine Cavafy’s work and investigate in depth the nature in which he covered Greek history in his poetry.

The event is free and open for everyone to attend, with the lecture stated to be of great interest in particular to those who enjoy Greek literature and cultural history.
