Evangelia Platanioti and Sofia Malkogeorgou completed their duet technical routine at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a sixth-place finish.
The Greek pair successfully performed their routine in the free segment of the competition, where, as in yesterday’s technical segment, they had the highest difficulty score (60.200) among the 17 participating pairs. They accumulated 281.8418 points.
Overall, Platanioti and Malkogeorgou achieved a total score of 532.3002 points, moving up two places from yesterday’s standings. They surpassed the duets from Spain and Japan to secure sixth place.
This is the best ranking ever achieved by Greek artistic swimming in the Olympic Games, matching the sixth-place finish of Christina Thalassinidou in the solo event at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
As expected, the gold medal was won by the twin sisters, China’s Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi, with 566.4783 points.
The other two podium spots were claimed by countries that had never won an Olympic medal in artistic swimming before.
Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe from Great Britain took second place with 558.5367 points, narrowly edging out the Dutch sisters Bregje and Noortje de Brouwer, who finished third with 558.3963 points.
Anna-Maria and Eirini Alexandri, representing Austria and second after the technical routine, just missed out on a podium finish, ending in fourth place.
