The Greek Community of Melbourne will host a two-part presentation by Eugenia Mitrakas, shedding light on the formative years of Pronia, originally known as the Australian Greek Welfare Society on August 29, at 7 pm at the Greek Centre.

Mitrakas, a key figure in the establishment of Greek welfare services in Australia, will delve into the society’s early history, with the first part of her talk covering the years 1968 to December 1972.

Mitrakas’s journey began in 1969 when, as a student, she conducted a feasibility study that would lay the groundwork for what would become Pronia. Her extensive research involved combing through archives at Neos Kosmos, the National Library, the University of Melbourne, and ASIC, piecing together the rich history of Greek welfare efforts in Australia.

The first session will explore the initial challenges and achievements of the Australian Greek Welfare Society, while the second part will focus on its continued growth and impact from December 1972 to the end of 1982.

Eugenia Mitrakas was one of the founding members of the University of Melbourne Greek Club in 1968, serving as its first Honorary Secretary. A year later, she spearheaded a campaign to introduce Modern Greek language courses at the university, and by 1970, she played a pivotal role in fundraising efforts for the Modern Greek Lectureship Appeal. Her leadership extended to the formation of the Greek Professional Association (GPA), where she served as the inaugural Honorary Secretary.

In 1972, the GPA identified key issues within the Greek community, including welfare, education, and elderly care. These discussions led to the establishment of the Australian Greek Welfare Society on 15 August 1972, marking a significant milestone in the provision of support services for the Greek community in Australia.

Mitrakas’s talks will provide a glimpse into the early struggles and successes of the society, offering invaluable insights for both historical enthusiasts and those involved in community welfare initiatives today.
